Star Wars, Unschooling, and May 4th

Sue Patterson

Yes! Kids can learn a ton from watching Star Wars!

All these little pieces... even when it's just exposure... add up.

They help kids see,

"Hey, I like robotics."

or

"What's he talking about when they say the 'structural integrity of the ship?'"

Everything counts!
But sometimes it's hard to see.
And some of us are knee-deep in deschooling, so we need examples of how learning IS happening without us orchestrating it all.

Here are some examples of subjects weaving through a Star Wars movie.

⭐ MATH

- Geometric shapes and concepts (angles, symmetry and 3-D shapes}
- Sizes and proportion compariso up ns
- Speed, distance, time… estimating, measuring.
- Calculating the probability of success or failure
- The use of formulas, coordinates, analyzing patterns and making calculations are all components of algebra

⭐ SCIENCE

- Astronomy (planets, stars, moons, galaxies)
- Physics (gravity and magnetic forces.)
- Biology (adaptations of creatures and species to their environments)
- Robotics and Artificial intelligence
- Chemistry (atoms, elements, chemical reactions, crystals)
- Engineering (structural integrity of the spaceships, weapons, aerodynics)
- Genetics and ideas of inheriting certain traits.

⭐ TECHNOLOGY

- Special effects
- Graphic Design

⭐ SOCIAL STUDIES

- Human behavior
- Philosophy/ethics - good vs. evil
- Similarities and comparisons to historic wars
- Critical Thinking - consequences of actions

⭐ FINE ART

- Music and how it influences us
- Use of colors and shading
- Costuming
- Hair/makeup techniques
