How to Spark Curiosity without Lesson Plans

Sue Patterson

Wishing you had a plan?

Every fall, parents start looking for a plan — something that keeps kids engaged and learning without burning anyone out.

We don’t need rigid schedules like schools use, with bells and deadlines though. Still, a little structure can actually help — even for unschoolers.

That’s why we have the Strewing Calendar!

✨ Strewing: my low-budget, high-impact alternative to curriculum shopping sprees.  ✨

What is Strewing?

If strewing is new to you, it’s a casual way to scatter interesting ideas, books, and activities into your child’s world and letting curiosity do the work.  Instead of lesson plans or worksheets, strewing makes learning feel natural and fun.

The Strewing Calendar puts those ideas into a calendar format so our kids can get introduced to the concept — but without overscheduling.

And for parents, it gives you  a light structure — a skeleton plan — without turning into rigid schedules or curriculum. Each day, you have a quick, low-prep idea at your fingertips. You don’t have to scramble or overthink. You just glance, pick, and go.

✨ If it looks like clutter but sparks curiosity — congrats, you’re strewing!

This is especially important this time of year. Kids are looking around and parents are feeling that pressure to ‘do enough.’
The Strewing Calendar gives you scaffolding to keep it fresh WITHOUT burning you out trying to plan something new every day.

And if the kids say, “Nah, not interested,” it’s no biggie. You’re not frustrated. You know I’ll have more for you and the kids another day.

Kids love looking at the calendar themselves. Some families hang the calendar on the fridge so kids of all ages can see it easily, circling those days they’re most excited about:

Parfaits for Breakfast?’ That’s a for sure yes!

Or maybe they’re drawn to the magic-themed day and want to watch videos about Harry Houdini.

Seasonal celebrations are in there too — things happening in the real world that kids can connect to.

✨ “The world is full of wonders — I love leaving little sparks for my child to discover.

When you subscribe, you’ll get:

  • A printable monthly calendar with a fun celebration for every single day.

  • A weekly Sunday email from me with extra resources for the week ahead.

Parents often skim through, mention ideas casually, or text links to their kids. Sometimes families watch a short video clip together over lunch. It’s easy, casual, and it fits into your week without pressure.

And that’s important — these are ideas, not requirements. If you miss Tuesday because you’re out and about? No problem. Pick it up on Thursday when you’re home. The Strewing Calendar gives you a framework, but you get to decide how and when to use it. There’s no Strewing Calendar police to tell you you’ve missed a day!

✨ “Pinterest makes it pretty. But the Strewing Calendar makes it possible.

And for parents who need to identify subjects or learning objectives — whether your state requires reports or you’re just feeling nervous — there’s a private portal. Each celebration includes every subject we worry about — math, science, language arts, history, art . So you can easily log learning for progress reports or reassure your own inner critic (or your mother-in-law).

Strewing works because it keeps curiosity alive. It reminds your child that the world is interesting, and it reminds you that you don’t have to force it. You just create opportunities — and watch what takes root.

You don’t have to be an unschooler to use this. Loads of homeschoolers are using the Strewing Calendar as an easy way to add curiosity and joy without creating extra work for themselves. It’s a way to keep kids engaged while keeping mom from burning out.

✨ The world is full of wonders — I love leaving little sparks for my child to discover.

So if you’ve been looking for something to guide you without weighing you down — the Strewing Calendar might be just what you need. It gives your kids a steady flow of inspiration, and it gives
you the confidence that learning is happening in fun, meaningful ways - without having to design lessons.

See how easy it is to sprinkle curiosity into your family’s day!

I Want This - SIGN ME UP!

The Strewing Calendar IS included in the Creating Confidence Membership, if you’re weighing out what resources you want to tap into. But it’s available separately too.
