The Unschooling Roller Coaster & Why You Shouldn't Ride Alone!

Sue Patterson

If unschooling feels like an emotional roller coaster lately, this episode will help you understand why — and what actually makes the ride smoother. Let's break down the real reasons parents feel wobbly and why support makes such a dramatic difference, especially during high-pressure seasons like the holidays.

Here’s what we explore:

  • Why unschooling feels so up-and-down at first
  • The hidden pressures that make parents question everything
  • The real reason doing this alone feels overwhelming
  • What genuine support actually provides
  • How community can steady your nerves and calm your home
  • Why this season is the easiest time to get help

This episode is for parents who want clarity, steadiness, and reassurance that they truly don’t have to figure out unschooling alone.

The Unschooling Roller Coaster (and Why You Shouldn’t Ride It Alone)

Before we begin, take a breath with me.

If unschooling feels like a roller coaster right now...
If one day you feel confident and the next day you feel like you’re absolutely screwing it up...
If you’re exhausted by the second-guessing, the googling, the overthinking...

You’re not alone.

In fact, this podcast is exactly for you.

I’m Sue Patterson, and for decades I’ve watched parents go through this same up-and-down ride. And today, I want to talk about something that a LOT of people don’t realize:

You don’t have to ride this roller coaster by yourself.

And honestly?
Most parents
shouldn’t.

Especially at the beginning.

Especially during the holidays.

So today I want to talk about:

  • why this stage feels so hard
  • why you feel so wobbly even if things are going “pretty well”
  • what actually helps unschooling parents feel steady
  • and whether you might need a different kind of support

I want to share what I really know...

The way I wish someone had talked to me when I first started.

WHY THIS FEELS SO HARD (AND IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT)

Unschooling exposes every insecurity you’ve ever carried about parenting.

Every old belief.
Every fear.
Every
“what if I mess this up?”

And while your kids are relaxing a little...
And your home is getting calmer...
And you’re actually seeing signs of healing...

You’re still carrying the schoolish measuring stick in your backpack.

And THEN you leave your house —
and walk into:

  • Relatives
  • opinions
  • comparisons
  • expectations
  • judgment
  • and their “innocent questions” that feel like tiny stabs

No wonder it can feel so shaky.

This isn’t a failure.

This is the
deschooling stage.

And it’s absolutely normal for this stage to feel like a roller coaster.

WHY GOING IT ALONE MAKES EVERYTHING SO MUCH HARDER

Here’s the part that most people don’t talk about:

When you try to “figure it out yourself,” you’re actually:

  • Overthinking
  • Isolating
  • Stuffing down your questions
  • Reading too much
  • Doubting your instincts
  • Losing momentum

ALL while staying polite around people who don’t understand unschooling at all.

It’s no wonder you feel confused.

This is not a solo sport.
It never has been.

Unschooling is a mindset shift, not a curriculum swap.
And mindset shifts require
support, reflection, and community.

You’re not weak for needing help —
you’re HUMAN.

WHAT SUPPORT ACTUALLY DOES (THE PART NO ONE TELLS YOU)

When parents join my membership, they think they’re buying:

  • Guides, ebooks, resources
  • Weekly coaching calls

But what they’re actually getting is:

  • relief
  • someone to message when the panic hits
  • a place where nobody judges them
  • support that feels like exhaling
  • a place to stop spiraling
  • the confidence they thought was missing
  • Other parents who get it

Our community becomes the place where:

  • your questions are normal
  • your fears make sense
  • your wins get celebrated
  • and your nervous system finally relaxes a little

You’re not trying to prove anything.
You’re not trying to “keep up.”

You’re just held — while you learn how to hold your child.

That’s what makes things easier.

That’s what makes homes calmer.

That’s what makes parenting lighter.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY...

Someone new came to a Monday call and said:

“I’ve been trying to find local families...but everyone feels cliquey or judgmental. This group is the opposite of all that”

Another mom said:

“I’ve been in other online groups. But this is real support. In the moment. When I really need it.”

Another said:

“I’ve learned more in 3 months than in 3 years of trying to figure this out alone.”

This is what the membership gives people.

Not curriculum.
Not rules.
Not pressure.

But instead

Steadiness.
Connection.
Perspective.

And
Confidence.

WHY NOW

(THE REAL BLACK FRIDAY REASON)

I’m not going to yell SALE at you.
I don’t really do that.

But I  am going to say this clearly:

If you’ve been struggling...
If you’re overwhelmed...
If you’ve been doing this alone...
If your confidence is shaky...
If you wish someone could just help you figure things out...

Then this is the best time of the year to join.

Not because of some sense of urgency.

But because:

you deserve support

you don’t need to keep doing this alone

and this can actually make your holidays easier

The Black Friday price is simply a way to open the door wider for people who’ve been hesitating.

And if you’re listening later?
Message me — I always have something to help you.

WHO THIS ISN’T FOR

But I do want to say...

My membership is not for everyone.

It’s NOT for parents who:

already have a big in-person unschooling support system - they don’t need it.

prefer total privacy and no community interaction - we can talk 1:1 without a group.

Or maybe just want to continue trying DIY a little more.

But it IS for parents who:

  • feel alone
  • feel uncertain
  • feel judged
  • feel overwhelmed
  • want gentler days
  • want a steady mentor
  • want weekly grounding
  • want a place where unschooling makes sense
  • want to stop second-guessing everything

If that’s you... you’ll love it in the group!

One last thing...

Unschooling is not a curriculum.
It’s not a method.

It’s a new way of seeing your child.
A new way of seeing yourself.
A new way of seeing learning.

And it’s so much easier to see ALL of that, when you don’t have to do it alone.

So if something in you whispered “yes” at any moment during this episode —follow it.

You deserve support.
Your child deserves a grounded parent.
And your future self will thank you.

I'm here when you’re ready. 💛

How do Unschooling moms make plans?
By Sue Patterson March 16, 2026
One of the questions unschooling parents ask all the time is: “But how do you plan anything?” Most of us were trained to believe planning means lesson plans, subjects, and assignments. So when you remove curriculum, it can feel like you’ve removed the roadmap too. But unschooling planning isn’t about deciding what your child must learn next. It’s about shaping a life where curiosity has room to grow.
